WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Barack Obama today released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Americans with Disabilities Restoration Act, H.R. 3195.

"We have a collective responsibility to ensure that every American has access to the opportunity to fulfill their dreams and live independent lives. With nearly fifty-four million Americans living with disabilities today, it must be a priority for our government to do everything it can to protect and respect the needs of these Americans.

"The House of Representatives took an important step today by passing this legislation, and I applaud Leader Hoyer and Congressmen Conyers, George Miller, and Sensenbrenner for their efforts. I look forward to working with a true leader on this issue, Senator Harkin, to reaffirm our nation's commitment to giving every American an equal chance."

I agree with senator Obama. The passage of the ADA Restoration Act is the most important Bill of all. Everyone with a disability should have the same rights as any other individual.

I'm sadened to hear Barack's position on disability. Nothing in his statement says anything about helping people out financially who can't work due to their disability. It's all about forcing them to work even if they can't citing his Father in law, who had to struggle just to get to work. What about those who can't work?
Is there anything in his statement about helping those who can't help themselves?
Doesn't seem very Christian at all. I think Obama's a hypocrit and I've been a life long Democrat. I will not be voting this year. Obama is so right wing it's not even funny.
There has to be a safety net for those who can't help themselves, and untill Obama adresses that safety net, I will assume he's here to finish Bush's agenda to privatize social security.
The last thing we need is to put social security in the hands of those that have gotten us into this financial crisis in the first place.
